Hocking College Energy Institute

Completed in 2009, The Hocking College Energy Institute project was awarded the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certification – the highest tier of the LEED certification offered by the U.S. Green Building Council. This certification is offered as a tool to achieve high performance design and construction of buildings in areas such as human and environmental health. It includes sustainable site development, water savings and using more energy efficient materials to promote indoor environmental quality.

For the heating and cooling of this 12,000 square foot facility, General Temperature Control installed fourteen geo-thermal pumps that tap the constant 55 degree temperature below the Earth’s surface.

Other unique and energy efficient technology used in the building of this facility:

  • grass roofing system
  •  solar panels
  • no flush urinals
  • exposed mechanical systems
  • fuel cells and wind turbines.

These energy efficient systems are being used to operate the learning lab for the Hocking College students and use 60% to 70% less energy than systems in a traditional building.
